The Chapel of St. Joseph the Craftsman (Chapel on Water) in Ojców
|
Ojców gmina: Skała |
The Chapel of St. Joseph the Craftsman (Worker) also known as the Chapel on Water, was transformed from spa baths into a sacred building in 1901. The setting up of the chapel on water is traditionally linked to an edict of Tsar Nicholas II forbidding the building of sacred buildings on Ojców land – hence the cunning ploy of the residents in placing it “on water”. The wooden chapel, which has features of the so-called Swiss-Ojców style as well as the Zakopane style, is built to a cross plan and supported by pillars planted in the bed of the Prądnik river. The interior contains three altars shaped like the gable walls of peasant dwellings. |
